ABOUT
About this spot
Otori Taisha in Nishi Ward, Sakai, Osaka Prefecture was formerly a Kanpei Taisha and is now a Beppyo shrine. Recorded as a Myojin Taisha in the Engishiki, it was the only one in Izumi Province and served as the province's ichinomiya. Its deities are Yamato Takeru and the ancestral deity of the Otori clan. Tradition says a shrine was built where the spirit of Yamato Takeru, as a white swan, finally alighted. The current buildings were rebuilt in 1909 after a lightning fire in 1905.
The main hall is built in the Otori-zukuri style, a gabled, entrance-in-the-gable form said to be among the oldest after Izumo Taisha-zukuri. In April 2025, four structures including the main hall, gate and worship hall were designated Sakai City cultural properties. The grounds include a statue of Yamato Takeru and a sacred camphor tree with exposed roots.
The Hanatsumi Festival is held on the third Saturday of April, and on the first Saturday of October danjiri floats are brought to the shrine. The main annual festival is on August 13. Allow 30 minutes to an hour. Sumiyoshi Taisha shares its Shukuin Tongu rest shrine with Otori Taisha.
