ABOUT
About this spot
Lake Jusan (Juusanko) is a brackish lake on the northwest coast of the Tsugaru Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. It covers about 17.8 square kilometers, has a shoreline of about 31.4 km, lies within Tsugaru Quasi-National Park, and straddles Goshogawara, Nakadomari and the city of Tsugaru. It formed as the sea receded after the Jomon transgression and connects to the Sea of Japan through a narrow mouth at the Iwaki River estuary, so seawater flows in at high tide. The lake is famous for Yamato clams (shijimi); "Jusanko Yamato Shijimi" was registered as a Geographical Indication in 2016. Lakeside restaurants serve clam ramen, rice bowls and curry, and from late April to early October visitors can pick clams by hand in designated areas for a fee. In the 13th to early 15th centuries, the trading port of Tosaminato flourished here as a base of the Ando clan, and the Tosaminato site was designated a national historic site in 2005. Nakanoshima Bridge Park on an island in the lake is reached by a footbridge (closed December to March). The nearest major station is JR Goshogawara, from which Konan buses run to the lake.
