ABOUT
About this spot
The Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum, nicknamed "OkiMu", is a prefectural cultural facility in Omoromachi, Naha. It opened on November 1, 2007 as the first complex in the prefecture to combine a museum and an art museum. Its predecessor was the Okinawa Prefectural Museum in Shuri, and the new building has about twice the floor area. The building is modeled on an Okinawan gusuku (castle), with exterior walls of Ryukyu limestone that recall castle stonework, and it is fully barrier-free. The museum's permanent exhibition has the main theme "Living with the Sea and the Islands", introducing the nature, history and culture of the islands. Its collection includes the Bankoku Shinryo Bell, from the main hall of the former Shuri Castle, an Important Cultural Property. The art museum's collection exhibition centers on works and artists connected to Okinawa. Hours are 9:00-18:00 (last entry 17:30) and until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; it is closed on Mondays and over the New Year. Permanent exhibition admission is 530 yen for adults at the museum and 400 yen for the art museum's collection exhibition; special exhibitions are charged separately. It is about a 10-minute walk from Omoromachi Station on the Yui Rail monorail. Shuri Castle is about 2.7 km away.
