ABOUT

About this spot

Dainichi-ji in Itano Town, Tokushima, is Temple No. 4 of the Shikoku 88-Temple Pilgrimage. Its mountain name is Kurogan-zan, and its principal image is Dainichi Nyorai. It stands in a quiet mountain setting beside a stream. Note that there are two other temples of the same name on the pilgrimage (No. 13 in Tokushima City and No. 28 in Konan). According to temple tradition, Kukai founded it in 815 after enshrining a Dainichi Nyorai statue he carved himself. After repeated decline and restoration, it was supported by the Hachisuka lords of Tokushima in the Edo period. The grounds include the gate rebuilt in 2018, the main hall, the Daishi hall and a corridor that holds 33 wooden Kannon statues. The Awa Pilgrim Trail was designated a national historic site in 2019. A visit takes about 30 minutes. Temple No. 5, Jizo-ji, is about 1.6 km away.
