ABOUT
About this spot
Senshu Park, in central Akita City, is a vast urban park developed on the site of Kubota Castle, the residence of the Satake clan, lords of the Akita domain, from the 7th year of Keicho (1602) until the Meiji era. The grounds, incorporating Japanese garden styles, were selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots, and offer beautiful seasonal scenery: about 700 cherry trees in spring, lotus filling the moat in summer, and vivid autumn foliage. There are many historical highlights too, and the restored "Osumi Yagura" (corner turret) and "Front Gate" evoke the atmosphere of the former castle town. The observation room of the corner turret in particular offers a view of all of Akita city and is a popular photo spot. At certain times of year, the "Akita Dog Meet-and-Greet" is also set up in the park, becoming a highlight of any trip. With its easy access within walking distance of the station, it is a classic Akita sightseeing spot loved by a wide range of visitors, from solo strolls to walks around town with friends and family picnics.
