ABOUT
About Akita
Akita Prefecture is defined by the beauty of its changing seasons, set between the Ou Mountains and the Sea of Japan. In terms of history, the "Kakunodate Samurai Residence District," which preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period, is the best known; in spring, weeping cherry trees stand out beautifully against the black fences. The "Namahage" of the Oga Peninsula, inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, is an important cultural ritual that symbolizes local tradition and the bonds between people. The prefecture is also blessed with nature. Refreshing spots are scattered across it, including the mysterious blue of Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan; the breathtaking views of Lake Towada, which straddles the border with Aomori Prefecture; and the Nyuto Onsen area, beloved by fans of secluded hot springs. The food culture is remarkably rich as well, with a wealth of regional dishes packed with local wisdom: "Inaniwa udon," counted among Japan's three great udon varieties; "kiritanpo nabe," best enjoyed in the new-rice season; and "iburigakko," smoked pickled daikon with a distinctive, addictive flavor. Sake brewed from fine rice and water is also highly regarded by enthusiasts across the country. In winter, fantastical scenes such as the kamakura of Yokote unfold, and whatever the season of your visit, you will encounter warm-hearted people and a rich culture.
