ABOUT
About this spot
Located in the center of Akita City, the Akita City Red Brick Museum is a stately yet elegant red-brick building that strongly retains the atmosphere of the Meiji era. Completed in the first year of Taisho as the head office of the former Akita Bank, its highlight is the Renaissance-style architecture, with white porcelain tiles and red brick on the exterior and abundant fine marble in the interior. Inside, you can see the soaring atrium of the former banking hall and the lavishly decorated former reception room, and feel the prosperity and glamour of the time. Permanent exhibits also include works by Shiro Sekiya, a Living National Treasure metalsmith born in Akita, and by printmaker Tokuyuki Katsuhira, who continued to depict the everyday lives of Akita's common people, so you can enjoy art appreciation as well as history. With its many photogenic spots, it is ideal for girls' trips and dates, as well as for spending quiet time exploring history alone. It is within walking distance of Akita Station and easy to reach, making it a must-see landmark for sightseeing in Akita City.
