ABOUT

About this spot

Oga Aquarium GAO, located at the tip of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, charms with its superb location against the backdrop of the grand Sea of Japan. The first thing to greet you inside is the "Oga Sea Large Tank." In this giant tank recreating Oga's sea in spring, you can enjoy the spectacular sight of about 2,000 fish of around 40 species swimming around. The star of this aquarium is the powerful polar bear "Gota." The sight of him playing dynamically with his large body and diving into the water will surely captivate everyone from children to adults. A special exhibit on "hatahata," Akita's prefectural fish essential to its food culture, is also a unique feature of GAO and a valuable spot to observe their biology all year round. There is plenty more to enjoy, such as being soothed by adorable spotted seals and penguins and touching sea creatures in the touch pool. At the observation restaurant you can dine with a panorama of the Sea of Japan, ideal for lunch on a date or family trip. It is an unmissable landmark of Akita sightseeing, where you can fully feel the charm of Oga's nature and sea creatures.
