ABOUT
About this spot
Mt. Kanpu, located at the base of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, is a volcano 355 m above sea level. The mountain's greatest feature is that it is entirely covered in beautiful lawn with almost no trees to block the view. As a result, you can enjoy an unobstructed 360-degree panorama from the summit. The famous "revolving observation deck" is a unique facility whose floor makes one full turn over about 13 minutes, letting you take in, from your seat, the whole of the Oga Peninsula, the Hachirogata reclaimed land that once boasted the largest area in the Orient, and the majestic Sea of Japan. When the weather cooperates, you can even see Mt. Chokai and the Shirakami Mountains far in the distance. A driveway has been built nearly to the summit, so you can easily enjoy the superb views, making it very popular as a family trip and date spot. It is also known as a holy land of paragliding, and colorful gliders soaring in the sky add color to the scenery. At dusk you can watch the beautiful sunset sinking into the Sea of Japan, making it an unmissable spot for photography lovers too. It is a leading Akita sightseeing attraction where you can enjoy the openness of nature and spectacular views at the same time.
