ABOUT

About this spot

Nanataki ("seven falls") is a waterfall in Kosaka Town, Kazuno District, Akita Prefecture, and is listed among Japan's 100 Best Waterfalls. True to its name, seven small falls are linked together, with a total drop of about 60 meters. The area around the falls is laid out as a park across Prefectural Route 2 from the Michi-no-Eki Kosaka Nanataki roadside station. There is a lawn, a water mill and walking paths, and you can cross a bridge to reach a spot close to the pool below. Nanataki Shrine stands beside the plunge pool. According to a legend, a wealthy landowner named Magozaemon boasted by throwing things into the forbidden falls, then dreamed of a great serpent, feared punishment and built a shrine beside the falls in apology. The falls change character with the seasons, with fresh green in early summer and colored leaves in autumn. Lake Towada is about 17 km away.
