ABOUT
About this spot
"Oga no Namahage," a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, has been passed down amid the harsh nature of the Oga Peninsula. At the Namahage Museum, you can learn in depth about its historical background and spiritual meaning through valuable materials. The main highlight is the "Namahage Gathering" corner. The sight of more than 150 distinctive namahage masks, actually used in communities across Oga City, lined up in a row is truly overwhelming. You can observe up close the differences in expression and costume details from region to region, and it is also very popular as a photo spot. In addition, at the adjacent Oga Shinzan Denshokan, you can experience up close a demonstration of the traditional event in which real Namahage visit a home (a combination ticket is recommended). The powerful voices of the Namahage echoing through an old farmhouse will make unforgettable memories for everyone from children to adults. Whether you want to learn about the culture on a solo trip or share the excitement with family and friends, this is a must-see attraction that symbolizes Akita's spiritual culture.
