ABOUT

About this spot

The Kubota Castle ruins (Senshu Park), in central Akita City, are a famous site that conveys the history of the Satake clan, who ruled the 200,000-koku Akita domain in the Edo period. The castle's greatest feature is that it was built with earthen ramparts, almost without stone walls, and it has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles as a valuable historic site that retains much of its original appearance. Strolling through the park, the powerful "Front Gate" and the "Osumi Yagura" (corner turret), whose interior is a museum, catch the eye. From the corner turret on the high ground, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Akita city. The "Satake Historical Museum" on the main enclosure site displays armor and old documents associated with the Satake family, with content that history fans will love. The changing seasons are beautiful too: about 700 cherry trees bloom in spring, lotus flowers fill the moat in summer, fiery foliage appears in autumn, and in winter the snowscape is full of charm. Within walking distance of the station and easy to reach, it is a classic Akita sightseeing spot recommended for a wide range, from a quiet solo stroll to a history trip with family and friends.
