ABOUT
About this spot
Oyasukyo (Oyasu Gorge) in Yuzawa, Akita Prefecture, is a spectacular spot where you can feel the breath of the earth up close. The main highlight is the Daifunto, where scalding water and white steam burst out with a roar from the rock wall of a V-shaped valley. Walk down the steps of the promenade and a dynamic scene unfolds in which you can feel the energy of the planet on your skin. The changing seasons add to its appeal: fresh green in spring, blazing autumn foliage, and in winter the appearance of giant icicles known as "shigakko." The promenade along the gorge has about 300 to 400 steps depending on the entrance, but it is well maintained, and you can enjoy nature while working up a pleasant sweat (about 30 minutes). After your walk, head to Oyasukyo Onsen, a hot spring renowned since ancient times. Ryokan and foot baths are found nearby, and a day-trip bath makes a refreshing finish. It is a sensory sightseeing destination suited to family drives and to solo travelers who want to quietly face nature.
