ABOUT
About this spot
The Masuda Townscape in the southern part of Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, is a valuable site conveying the history of wealthy merchants who prospered when the town was a hub for goods. The town's top highlight is the rare architectural style of the "uchigura," in which a storehouse is built inside the house. Devised to protect the storehouse from the severe winter cold and snow, the structure is luxurious and sturdy beyond what the exterior suggests. The solemn space revealed the moment the door opens overwhelms visitors. Along the main street, merchant houses built from the Meiji to early Showa periods line up, and many are still carefully used and open to the public. A charm is being able to closely observe designs that condense the high skills of artisans, including facilities designated Important Cultural Properties. It is ideal for history lovers and for those who want to capture atmospheric scenery with a camera. Resting at a modern cafe renovated from a storehouse and enjoying the slowly flowing time makes for a luxurious adult holiday. For family, friends, or solo travelers, it is a special place to feel Akita's deep culture.
