ABOUT
About this spot
Kinkaku-ji (Rokuon-ji) is a signature Kyoto sightseeing spot, a temple converted from a villa built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. The top highlight is the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku), a gorgeous relic hall said to be covered in pure gold leaf applied over lacquer. The "Upside-Down Kinkaku" beautifully reflected in Kyoko-chi Pond looks stunning from any angle, making it an ideal photo spot. Beyond the Golden Pavilion, the surrounding pond-strolling garden is also a must-see. Designated a Special Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty, it shows seasonal expressions: spring cherry blossoms, summer green maples, autumn foliage, and winter snow, offering a different charm every visit. Within the grounds are other historic remains, such as the "Ganka-sui" spring that Ashikaga Yoshimitsu loved and the "Sekka-tei" tea house built for viewing the Golden Pavilion glowing in the setting sun. At the end of your visit, receiving a Kinkaku-ji-limited amulet or temple stamp is also recommended. Why not experience an extraordinary space shining in gold, thinking about history with family and friends?
