ABOUT

About this spot

The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto (MoMAK) is a national art museum in Okazaki Park, Sakyo Ward, run by the National Museum of Art. It stands right next to the great torii gate of Heian Jingu Shrine, at the heart of the Okazaki cultural district. It opened on March 1, 1963 as the Kyoto branch of the National Museum of Modern Art and became independent in 1967. The current building was designed by architect Fumihiko Maki and completed in 1986; it was designed to stay lower than the neighboring torii gate. The collection of about 12,000 works focuses on Nihonga and Western-style painting of the Kyoto art world, and also includes prints, sculpture, crafts such as ceramics and textiles (the works of Kawai Kanjiro are especially well known) and photography. According to the official website, it is open 10:00-18:00 (last entry 17:30), until 20:00 on Fridays during special exhibitions, and closed on Mondays and over the New Year. Admission to the 2026 collection exhibition is 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for university students; high school students and younger, under-18s and those aged 65 or over are free. There is no parking. It is about a 10-minute walk from Higashiyama Station on the subway Tozai Line. Heian Jingu and Kyoto City Zoo are within about 400 m.
