ABOUT

About this spot

Byodoin Temple, founded in the Heian period by the regent Fujiwara no Yorimichi, is a World Heritage Site said to embody the Pure Land paradise in this world. The main attraction, the "Phoenix Hall (Hoo-do)," enshrines a seated statue of Amida Nyorai at its center, and a pair of phoenixes shines atop its roof. Its graceful form reflected in Aji-ike Pond is far too famous as the design on the 10-yen coin. In the state-of-the-art museum "Hoshokan" within the grounds, you can closely and leisurely view precious temple treasures such as the National Treasure Bodhisattvas Worshipping on Clouds and the phoenix statues. The lighting and display methods have been carefully considered, and even those who are not history fans will be sure to be overwhelmed. The surrounding area is filled with the aroma of Uji tea, and before or after visiting the temple, we recommend enjoying authentic matcha sweets at one of the long-established tea merchants. Why not stroll the famous garden, which shows different faces through the seasons, such as wisteria flowers in spring and autumn leaves in fall, and let your thoughts drift to the world of the Pure Land that Heian aristocrats longed for?
