ABOUT
About this spot
Standing in the center of Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, Tsuruga Castle (Wakamatsu Castle) is one of Tohoku's leading tourist attractions, a famous castle whose name is carved in history as impregnable. The biggest highlight is the keep topped with Japan's only "red tiles," recreated in 2011. Its form, standing out against a blue sky, conveys the gallant look of the late Edo period. Inside the castle is a history museum, with easy-to-understand exhibits on Aizu's history, Boshin War materials, and episodes related to the Byakkotai. From the observation deck on the top floor, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama over the Aizu Basin and the beautiful scenery of each season. In spring it is also known as one of Japan's leading cherry blossom spots with about 1,000 cherry trees in bloom, and the fantastical winter snowscape and autumn leaves are breathtakingly beautiful too. On the grounds there is also an authentic tea house, "Rinkaku," where you can enjoy matcha between historical strolls. For history fans as well as family trips and solo travelers, it is a spot where you can fully feel Japan's traditional beauty and depth of history.
