ABOUT

About this spot

Hottai Falls (Hottai no Taki) is a waterfall in Hyakutaku, Chokai, Yurihonjo, Akita Prefecture. It lies on the Akasawa River in the Koyoshi River system, with a drop of 57.4 meters. It is made up of the First, Second and Third Falls and the whole run is about 100 meters long. The falls formed where water drops over the end cliff of a lava flow from an eruption of Mount Chokai about 100,000 years ago, and columnar joints can be seen in the rock of the Third Falls. The river rises on Mount Chokai and the falls face the summit, an unusual arrangement that helped it be chosen as one of Japan's 100 Waterfalls. A local legend says the name comes from the monk Kukai: when he visited the village, the deity Fudo Myoo appeared and Kukai worshipped at the falls. A map dated 1697 already records the falls as "Hottaishi no Taki". In December 1960 the falls and the nearby potholes were designated the first Akita Prefecture site of scenic beauty and natural monument. The falls were also a filming location for the film version of Tsurikichi Sanpei, appearing as "Yonaki Valley". The highlights are the powerful water tumbling down in several steps over the rock face, and the rocks and deep greenery around the pool. In high-water periods the sound and spray are impressive, and in autumn the surrounding hills turn red and yellow against the white water. A maple festival is usually held at Hottai Park from mid to late October, and the 49th festival in 2026 ran from October 17 to 25. Admission is free, and there is a free car park for 100 cars and 10 large vehicles. The site is closed in winter, from late November to early May. The area has natural rocks, so wear sturdy shoes and take care after rain or in snow. Plan on 30 minutes to an hour to look around and take photos. The city road to the falls is sometimes closed, so check the latest notices from Yurihonjo City or the local tourism association before you go. Access is mainly by car from Yajima Station on the Yuri Kogen Railway Chokai-sanroku Line, which takes about 50 minutes. The falls lie at the foot of Mount Chokai, which makes it a good stop on an autumn drive.
