ABOUT
About this spot
The Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum stands in the Miyazaki Prefectural Cultural Park in Funatsuka, Miyazaki City, on the same grounds as the prefectural library and the prefectural arts theater. It opened in 1994 and collects and shows art from Japan and abroad, with a focus on artists connected to Miyazaki. The building has one basement level and three floors above ground, is 23 meters tall and has a total floor area of 10,333 square meters. It was designed by Shinichi Okada's office together with Iwakiri Sekkei, and Okada received the Japan Art Academy Prize for the design. One pillar of the collection is the work of the painter Eiq, who was born in Miyazaki; Gallery 3 on the first floor is dedicated to him. Among foreign works, the Surrealist paintings of artists such as Rene Magritte and Giorgio de Chirico and the contemporary Italian sculpture of Arnaldo Pomodoro and Giacomo Manzu are among the strongest collections in Japan. Collection exhibitions are free, while special exhibitions have separate fees. The museum is open 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on most Mondays and over the New Year holiday.
