ABOUT
About this spot
Nakagusuku Castle Ruins is a castle (gusuku) built in the 15th century by the famed general Gosamaru, gathering the best of the stone-masonry techniques of the time. Its curvaceous castle walls, which skillfully utilize a natural rocky hill, are said to best retain the original form among Okinawa's gusuku, and the site is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling the vast grounds, you can feel the advanced architectural techniques of the time up close. Do not miss in particular the "Back Gate," which forms a beautiful arch, and the stone walls built in the "kikko-zumi" (tortoiseshell-pattern) style, combining hexagonal stones. Because it stands on high ground, it is also popular as a scenic spot where, on clear days, you can see both the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is recommended for a wide range of people, including history fans, those who want to enjoy the views with a camera in hand, solo travelers who want to walk the castle ruins quietly, and families interested in historical learning. Why not spend a luxurious time feeling the breath of Okinawan history and the pleasant sea breeze?
