Nakijin Castle

One of Okinawa's finest castles, registered as a World Heritage Site. The stone walls with graceful curves and the emerald green East China Sea spreading below are a spectacular sight. In late January it also bustles as Japan's earliest cherry blossom viewing spot.

ABOUT

About this spot

Nakijin Castle Ruins, located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa's main island, is a historic place that once flourished as the residence of the Hokuzan kings. Its greatest highlight is the 1.5 km-long stone wall, built by skillfully using the terrain. The graceful curves, reminiscent of the Great Wall of China, were built by skilled craftsmen who piled up coral limestone, and have an overwhelming power that astounds visitors. From the main enclosure on the high ground, you can see the clear East China Sea, and on clear days a panoramic view extends all the way to the distant Iheya and Izena Islands. It is also famous as a spot for "Kanhizakura" (Taiwan cherry) blossoms, and from late January to early February the deep pink flowers adorn the castle walls, letting you feel the arrival of spring a little early. It is wonderful for a leisurely stroll alone while feeling the breath of history, and also recommended for taking photos with family or friends against the spectacular scenery. At the attached "Nakijin Village History and Culture Center," you can learn in depth about life and culture of the time through excavated items. Although a staple of Okinawa sightseeing, it is a special power spot that offers new discoveries and healing whenever you visit.
