Harmonica Yokocho

A retro labyrinth spreading out from the North Exit of Kichijoji Station, with roots in a postwar black market. Restaurants and general stores crowd the narrow alleys, making it one of Tokyo's most popular spots, bustling day and night.

ABOUT

About this spot

Located right in front of Kichijoji Station, "Harmonica Yokocho" is a historic shopping district rooted in a postwar black market. It got its name because the small shops lined up neatly along the narrow alleys resemble the mouthpieces lined up on a harmonica. Step inside and you enter a nostalgic world that feels like a trip back to the Showa era. Along the five maze-like streets, about 100 shops stand side by side, from long-established Japanese confectionery shops and fishmongers to modern cafes, standing bars, and unique general stores. During the day, enjoy street food favorites that draw lines, such as "winged gyoza" and "menchi-katsu" (minced meat cutlets), and at night the real thrill of this alley is hopping between lively bars and izakaya lit with red lanterns. It is ideal for drinks with friends, casual solo detours, and deep dates for couples. Be sure to feel the nostalgic, warm community atmosphere that remains within the sophisticated streets of Kichijoji.
