ABOUT

About this spot

Ueno Zoo is one of Japan's most historic and representative zoos, surrounded by lush nature right in the middle of the city. The zoo is divided into the East Garden and the West Garden, each offering encounters with a wonderfully varied cast of animals. There is no shortage of highlights, including the powerful Sumatran tigers and western gorillas. In the West Garden facing Shinobazu Pond, you can also observe rare animals such as the aye-aye. Historic buildings such as the Five-Story Pagoda, an Important Cultural Property, are scattered throughout, so even a simple stroll has its charm. Whether you spend a weekend enjoying animals with your family, take photos with friends, or observe quietly on your own, people of all ages can enjoy it at their own pace. Combined with the museums and galleries in Ueno Park, it makes for a full and satisfying day.
