ABOUT

About this spot

Nezu Shrine is a historic spot wrapped in rich greenery and tranquility, despite being in the heart of Tokyo. Its Gongen-zukuri shrine buildings, constructed by the fifth Tokugawa shogun, Tsunayoshi, are valuable "Important Cultural Properties" that convey the appearance of the era, and their colorful architectural beauty is breathtaking. The greatest attraction in the grounds is the "Thousand Torii," where vermilion torii gates line up in layers. This scenery, reminiscent of Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, is hugely popular as a power spot that refreshes you just by walking through it, as well as one of Tokyo's leading photo spots. During the "Tsutsuji Festival" held every year from April to May, about 3,000 azalea plants of about 100 varieties bloom, dyeing the grounds in vivid pink and white. The surrounding area is the shitamachi district known as "Yanesen" (Yanaka, Nezu, Sendagi), where old-fashioned charm remains. After worship, we recommend combining it with snacking along retro shopping streets and visiting stylish cafes in renovated old houses. From solo strolls to holiday outings with friends and family, you are sure to have a soothing time.
