ABOUT

About this spot

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, nicknamed Tobikan, is run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government inside Ueno Park in Taito Ward, Tokyo. It stands among the cluster of museums and the zoo on Ueno hill. It began as the Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum, which opened on May 1, 1926 as Japan's first public art museum, funded by a donation from the coal merchant Keitaro Sato. The current building was designed by Kunio Maekawa and completed in 1975, and it reopened after a major renovation in 2012. Rather than a permanent collection, the museum is known for changing special exhibitions and exhibition rooms used by open-call art groups. The museum is open 9:30 to 17:30. Entry to the building is free, and exhibitions charge admission separately. It is about a 7-minute walk from the Park Exit of JR Ueno Station. There is no parking.
