ABOUT

About this spot

The Nagoya City Art Museum is a municipal museum in Shirakawa Park in Sakae, Naka Ward, Nagoya. It opened on April 22, 1988. The building was designed by Kisho Kurokawa, a Nagoya native, who incorporated elements of local traditional architecture such as Nagoya Castle and Osu Kannon. One pillar of the collection is the Ecole de Paris, with works by Kisling, Chagall, Soutine, Modigliani and Utrillo, linked to the painter Ogiso Takanori, a native of Inazawa. Another is the Mexican Renaissance, with works by Posada, Orozco, Rivera and Frida Kahlo, reflecting Nagoya's sister-city ties with Mexico City. The museum also holds contemporary art and Japanese paintings. Exhibitions combine the permanent collection with special shows several times a year. Opening hours, closing days and admission fees can change, so check the official website before you go. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours, or half a day with a walk in the park.
