ABOUT
About this spot
The Museum of Art, Kochi is a prefectural museum in Takasu, in the east of Kochi City. It opened on November 3, 1993, and includes exhibition rooms, a concert hall, the Ishimoto Yasuhiro Photo Center, a museum shop and a cafe.
Its exterior takes the Tosa plaster storehouse as a motif, with white walls and large roofs. The building has three floors above ground and one below, and visitors approach through a path along a water garden.
The collection exceeds 40,000 works by about 440 artists. It is best known for its Marc Chagall holdings: five oil paintings and 1,202 prints. The museum also holds a large number of prints by the Kochi-born photographer Ishimoto Yasuhiro, with a dedicated gallery, as well as works by the Edo-period painter Ekin and by Expressionist and contemporary artists. The 399-seat hall has a movable noh stage.
It is open 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30) and closed from December 27 to January 1. Allow two to three hours. The Makino Botanical Garden and Chikurin-ji temple are nearby.
