ABOUT

About this spot

Harimaya Bridge in central Kochi City appears in the lyrics of the Tosa folk song "Yosakoi-bushi" and is one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Kochi Prefecture. Its origin is said to be a private bridge built in the Edo period by the merchants Harimaya and Hitsuya, who did business on opposite sides of the Horikawa canal, for crossing back and forth. The surrounding area is now maintained as a park, with the old Harimaya Bridge reconstructed. A classic spot for commemorative photos when sightseeing in Kochi, it bustles with visitors every day. Nearby is also a "karakuri clock" that, every hour, animates figures of Kochi Castle and Yosakoi dancers to the melody of "Yosakoi-bushi." Lively shopping arcades and Hirome Market, where you can enjoy Kochi cuisine, are also within walking distance, making this an ideal starting point for exploring central Kochi. At night it is lit up, offering a magical atmosphere quite different from the daytime.
