ABOUT
About this spot
Chikurin-ji Temple, nestled on Mt. Godai overlooking the city of Kochi, is a historic temple founded in 724 (Jinki 1) by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. As Temple No. 31 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, it is deeply revered as "Monju of Wisdom," including by exam takers and families. The temple has a wide variety of highlights. First to catch your eye is the 31-meter-tall "five-story pagoda," built entirely of cypress. The "Scenic Garden" spreading across the former monks' quarters is said to have been designed by Muso Soseki and creates seasonal charm. The treasure hall also houses 17 Buddhist statues designated Important Cultural Properties from the Heian and Kamakura periods, whose beauty and power are a must-see. In autumn, the grounds are dyed vivid vermilion, one of the best foliage spots in the prefecture. A route that combines a stroll with the neighboring Makino Botanical Garden is ideal for a weekend outing. Whether you want to quietly face yourself alone or feel the breath of history with friends, please visit. A peaceful, quiet time awaits you.
