ABOUT
About this spot
Ryugado, a signature sightseeing spot of Kochi Prefecture, is a mystical cave counted among Japan's Three Great Limestone Caves. The stalactites and other formations, shaped over about 175 million years, are truly works of art created by nature. Impressive highlights such as the "Tenkoseki" and the "Shibori-maku" are dotted throughout the cave and overwhelm visitors. Notably, there are traces of indigenous people of the Yayoi period living in the cave. The Yayoi pottery "Kami no Tsubo" encased in stalactites is extremely rare even by world standards and evokes the romance of history. In recent years, fantastical presentations with colorful LED lighting and projection mapping have been introduced, evolving it into a new entertainment space that fuses history and modern technology. Inside the cave it stays a cool 15 degrees Celsius all year, comfortable as a summer retreat and a warm sightseeing spot in winter. Since there are some stairs and narrow passages, walking shoes such as sneakers are recommended. It is perfect for those who want a thrilling sense of the extraordinary, whether a family trip, a drive with friends, or a solo adventure.
