Shimanto River

Known as "Japan's last clear stream." Its charm lies in the primal Japanese landscape dotted with "chinka-bashi" (submersible bridges) designed to sink during floods. Canoeing and sightseeing boat rides are also popular.

ABOUT

About this spot

The Shimanto River, 196 km long and the longest river in Shikoku, is affectionately known nationwide as "Japan's last clear stream." Because no large dams have been built, the river retains its natural, unspoiled appearance to this day. The symbol of the Shimanto River is the "chinka-bashi," or submersible bridge, which has no railings. Designed to sink underwater during floods so as not to be washed away, its form in harmony with the surrounding mountains and the clear water is the very picture of Japan's original landscape, soothing the hearts of visitors. There are many ways to enjoy it. You can relax and take in the view from the water on a yakata-bune or sightseeing boat, or take on canoeing or SUP and feel the clarity of the stream on your skin, a superb activity. Cycling along the river on a rental bicycle lets you enjoy the seasonal scenery while feeling the pleasant breeze. Whether immersing yourself in quiet time on a solo trip or playing to your heart's content in nature with family and friends, it is recommended. Why not leave the bustle of the city and refresh body and mind in time that flows gently?
