ABOUT

About this spot

Hase-dera in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, has long been known as the "Temple of Flowers," a beautiful temple whose grounds are decorated with seasonal flowers. Especially famous is the 399-step roofed corridor "Noborirou," designated an Important Cultural Property. With every step you climb, you feel a quiet that leaves the bustle of daily life behind and cleanses the heart. The National Treasure main hall, halfway up the mountain, is built in the same "stage style" as Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, and the view from it is truly spectacular. Cherry blossoms and thousands of peonies in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and vivid autumn foliage in fall spread out below. The principal image, the standing statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva, is about 10 meters tall, among the largest wooden statues in Japan, and its overwhelming presence moves all who pray before it. A historic temple town stretches along the approach, and strolling while tasting the local kusa-mochi (mugwort rice cake) is part of the enjoyment. Whether with family or friends, or alone to quietly reflect on yourself, it can be called an unrivaled healing spot.
