ABOUT

About this spot

Horyu-ji Temple in Ikaruga Town, Nara Prefecture, conveys the appearance of the Asuka period as the world's oldest wooden building complex, and in 1993 became the first site in Japan to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku, the temple has a history of more than 1,400 years, and a serene air drifts over you the moment you step inside. Highlights include Japan's oldest five-story pagoda, the Kondo (Main Hall) with its solemn beauty, and the Daihozoin, where many National Treasures such as the Kudara Kannon statue are enshrined. It is a perfect spot for history lovers, and also for those who want to stroll quietly while looking at beautiful wooden architecture and Buddhist statues. After touring the vast grounds, we also recommend enjoying the famous persimmon sweets on the approach in front of the gate. Why not spend a relaxed time on the weekend, reflecting on the timeless history? Whether you face it intently alone or walk learning history with family and friends, it is a famous site you should visit once in a lifetime.
