ABOUT
About this spot
Todai-ji, the symbol of Nara, is a magnificent temple that conveys the weight of history, founded by Emperor Shomu in prayer for the peace of the nation. The greatest highlight is, of course, the Vairocana Buddha (Rushana-butsu), affectionately known as the "Great Buddha of Nara." The Great Buddha Hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, and everyone is left speechless by its overwhelming scale. In addition to the Great Buddha Hall, the grounds hold sights scattered throughout, including the powerful Kongo Rikishi statues at the Nandaimon (Great South Gate), Nigatsu-do, famous as the stage of the Omizutori ceremony, and Sangatsu-do (Hokke-do), where many Buddhist statues are lined. The view from Nigatsu-do is especially wonderful, a superb spot overlooking the streets of Nara, also recommended for a solo stroll or a date. Adjacent to Nara Park, where you can meet the deer, it is perfect for outings with family and friends. We hope history lovers, and those who want to leave the bustle of daily life and quietly calm their hearts, will visit at least once. Why not enjoy the scenery that changes with the seasons while reflecting on the timeless history?
