ABOUT

About this spot

Located on the east side of Nara Park, Mt. Wakakusa is a symbolic Nara spot, 342 meters high, also called "Mt. Mikasa" because its shape resembles three hats stacked on top of one another. The whole mountain is covered with soft grass and there is almost nothing to block the view, so from the summit a grand panorama opens up, taking in the Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji, the five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji, and even Mt. Ikoma in the distance. The view from dusk into night is especially beautiful, and as one of the "New Three Great Night Views of Japan," it is crowded with couples and families on weekends. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes on foot from the foot of the mountain to the summit for a pleasant hike. Along the way, seeing wild deer grazing is another Nara charm. Every January, the winter tradition "Wakakusa Yamayaki" takes place, and the sight of the great flames scorching the night sky is spectacular. With cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall, it is an unmissable Nara sight where you can feel rich nature throughout the year. Please visit for a workout or a romantic night-view stroll with someone special.
