ABOUT
About this spot
Takatori Castle in Takatori Town, Nara Prefecture, is a famous castle counted as one of Japan's "Three Great Mountain Castles," alongside Bitchu Matsuyama Castle (Okayama Prefecture) and Iwamura Castle (Gifu Prefecture). No buildings remain today, but the splendid group of stone walls more than 10 meters tall that suddenly appear in the mountains convey its former grandeur. The route from the castle town to the main enclosure is a full-fledged hiking course, a spot recommended not only for history lovers but also for those who want to move their bodies healthily. Along the way there are scattered highlights such as the steep slope called "Nanamagari" (Seven Bends) and the "Saruishi" (monkey stones), said to be relics from the Asuka period. It is especially beautiful in the season of fresh greenery and autumn leaves, and the contrast between the stone walls and the vivid trees is a breathtaking view. The view from the main enclosure site is wonderful as well, and on a clear day you can see all of the Nara Basin. Away from the bustle of the city, immersing yourself in the romance of history in a quiet forest, it is perfect for a luxurious grown-up weekend trip. As there are many mountain paths, please wear comfortable walking shoes.
