ABOUT
About this spot
The Hoppo Bunka Museum in Konan-ku, Niigata City, is a historic spot preserving and displaying the former grand mansion of the Ito family, once called the greatest landowners in Echigo. Within the vast grounds of about 8,800 tsubo are buildings that spared no luxury and a beautiful stroll garden that shows different faces in each season. The top highlight is, above all, the stroll garden seen from the 100-tatami-mat great hall. In spring, the giant wisteria over 150 years old blooms with a sweet fragrance, and in autumn blazing foliage decorates the garden. Inside the building are also displayed antiques and historical materials collected by successive heads of the family, letting you feel the rich lives and culture of the time. On the grounds there are also a restaurant and a tea room in relocated old farmhouses, ideal for spending relaxed time. It is a sightseeing spot recommended to a wide range of people, from families on a holiday outing to solo travelers who want to quietly enjoy Japanese beauty and girls' trips with photography in mind.
