ABOUT
About this spot
Shibata Castle is located in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, and is a flatland castle that once flourished as the base of the Shibata domain. Also called "Ayame Castle" (Iris Castle), it has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles. The top highlights are the "Honmaru Omotemon" (main enclosure front gate) and the "former Ninomaru Sumi-yagura" (corner turret), both designated Important Cultural Properties. The "three-story turret," restored in 2004 (Heisei 16), has a rare structure with three shachi (golden dolphin ornaments) on its roof, unique in the country, and its distinctive beauty is sure to impress. The turret is located inside a Self-Defense Forces garrison, so the interior is not open to the public, but the exterior alone is well worth seeing. In spring, about 260 cherry trees blooming along the moat reflect on the water, making this one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the prefecture. There is also illumination at night, offering a magical look different from the daytime. It is a perfect place for history fans, solo travelers with a camera, and families out for a walk. Combine it with the nearby samurai residences and gardens to fully enjoy the atmosphere of a castle town.
