ABOUT
About this spot
Located at the eastern tip of Sado Island, Himezaki Lighthouse was first lit in 1895 (Meiji 28) and is known as the oldest surviving iron lighthouse in Japan. Reflecting its historical importance, it is designated a National Important Cultural Property and is also listed among the "100 Lighthouses of the World" and the "50 Lighthouses of Japan." Its rare construction of iron plates joined with rivets and its white hexagonal form stand out beautifully against the blue sea and sky. The open plaza around the lighthouse lets you enjoy a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan while feeling the pleasant sea breeze. It is also very popular as a photo spot, and on sunny days, during the day or at sunset, you can capture beautifully atmospheric pictures. Whether on a drive with family and friends or a quiet solo journey, it is an ideal place to feel the history and natural spirit of Sado. Stroll the surrounding walking paths, gaze at the white lighthouse that preserves a trace of the Meiji era, and enjoy a leisurely time.
