ABOUT
About this spot
Niigata City Aquarium Marinepia Nihonkai sits in a beautiful setting on the Sea of Japan coast and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the prefecture. The aquarium is divided into 10 areas, where you can observe around 20,000 creatures of about 600 species, from Niigata's familiar waterways to the oceans of the world. The top highlight is the Japan Sea Large Tank, which recreates the Sea of Japan. In the marine tunnel running along its bottom, rays and sharks glide leisurely overhead, giving you the immersive feeling of strolling along the seabed. The daily "Dolphin Performance" is also a must-see. The leaping dolphins put on a thrilling show that brings smiles to everyone, from adults to children. In the outdoor "Niigata Field," the satoyama countryside and sand dune environments of Niigata are recreated, offering a chance to learn about natural ecosystems up close. The aquarium is thoroughly barrier-free and has a cafe and shops, making it ideal for family trips, dates, or a solo journey in search of the calming presence of the sea. Why not spend a day touching the mystery of life, along with the ever-changing face of the Sea of Japan through the seasons?
