A scenic spot with continuous sheer cliffs rivaling the fjords of Norway. The strange rock formations and crystal-clear blue sea seen from the glass-bottom boat are spectacular.

ABOUT

About this spot

Tenkakuwan Ageshima Yuenchi on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, is one of the island's most celebrated scenic spots, where cliffs rising roughly 30 meters meet a sea so clear you can see right down to the seabed. Known as a filming location for the classic Showa-era film "Kimi no Na wa" (What Is Your Name?), the park features beautiful gardens and walking paths that make it ideal for a leisurely stroll. The top attraction is the "Kaichu Toshi-sen" (glass-bottom boat). Gazing through the glass hull into the crystal-clear water as the boat glides between towering rock formations is a thrilling experience. You can see fish swimming right below you, so it appeals to everyone from families with children to couples and solo travelers. The grounds also include the "Ageshima Umi no Digital-kan," which lets you experience the sea around Sado through digital technology, as well as an observation deck. From the deck, you can even watch the sun set into the Sea of Japan. Feel the sea breeze, and let the sculpted beauty of nature and the transparent water soothe you. This is a must-see classic of any Sado trip.
