ABOUT

About this spot

Sunpu Castle Park, in the center of Shizuoka City, is a historic castle site where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his later years. The spacious grounds, once surrounded by three moats, are now wrapped in lush greenery and loved as a retreat for citizens. The top attractions are the faithfully restored "Higashi-mon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura" and "Hitsujisaru Yagura," based on historical materials. Inside they serve as museums where you can learn in depth about Ieyasu's footsteps and the architectural techniques of the time. In the park's "Momijiyama Garden," a tea-serving experience with authentic tea and sweets is also popular while viewing four gardens modeled on Suruga's landscapes. On weekends you can spend time as you like, running around the open spaces with your family or taking a historical stroll with friends. In spring, about 450 cherry trees bloom, making it one of the prefecture's leading cherry blossom spots, crowded with visitors. Being within walking distance of the station, it is easy to reach, so whether at the start or end of your Shizuoka sightseeing, why not walk leisurely and feel the romance of history?
