ABOUT

About this spot

Shizuoka Sengen Shrine stands at the foot of Mount Shizuhata in Aoi Ward, Shizuoka. It is the collective name for three shrines, Kanbe, Asama and Otoshimioya. The main kami are Onamuchi, Konohanasakuya-hime and Otoshimioya. Asama Shrine is dated to 901. Tokugawa Ieyasu is said to have held his coming-of-age ceremony here at age 14 in 1555, and built shrine buildings of nearly their present scale after taking over Suruga. The present complex was built by the Tokugawa shogunate over about 60 years from 1804. The highlight is the group of lacquered, brilliantly colored buildings from the late Edo period. 26 structures are Important Cultural Properties. Behind the grounds, the Shizuhatayama Kofun is a National Historic Site. The Hatsukakai festival on April 5 features ancient child dance performances, an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It is about a 21-minute walk from Shin-Shizuoka Station or about 25 minutes from JR Shizuoka Station. Sumpu Castle is a short walk away. Allow about an hour.
