ABOUT
About this spot
Shuzenji Onsen in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a renowned hot spring with a history of more than 1,200 years. The onsen town spreads out along the murmuring Katsura River, and is cherished as the "Little Kyoto of Izu," where every corner makes a picture. The highlight of any stroll is the "Bamboo Grove Path," a beautiful trail through bamboo groves. The route, which crosses a vermilion bridge, is hugely popular as a date spot for couples and a photo spot for girls' trips. Shuzenji Temple, from which the town takes its name, lets you feel the weight of history in a serene atmosphere. At the heart of the town are "Tokko-no-Yu," said to have been brought forth by the monk Kobo Daishi, and the easy-to-use foot bath "Kawara-yu," perfect for soothing tired feet. When you get hungry, enjoy soba and Japanese sweets made with the local specialty wasabi. In the evening the bamboo grove is illuminated, wrapping the town in a magical atmosphere. Easily accessible from central Tokyo, it is ideal for a day trip or an overnight stay, for adults looking to forget everyday life and recharge on a holiday.
