ABOUT
About this spot
Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium sits right by Suruga Bay, Japan's deepest bay, and is a very rare aquarium in the world that puts the spotlight on deep-sea creatures. The biggest highlight is the coelacanth, a "living fossil" that has lived on unchanged for 350 million years. It is the only place in the world that displays not only stuffed specimens but also individuals frozen and preserved at minus 20 degrees Celsius, and their overwhelming presence is worth a visit. You can also experience the mysterious, wondrous deep-sea world up close, with fish that glow in the dark and uniquely shaped giant isopods. The "Minato Hachijusan-banchi" complex where the aquarium is located is lined with restaurants serving fresh seafood and souvenir shops, so you can enjoy it all day as a destination for a date or family trip. It is an indoor facility you can enjoy with peace of mind even on rainy days, so please be sure to visit when sightseeing in Numazu.
