ABOUT
About this spot
Standing in the center of Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Kakegawa Castle gained fame as a "famous castle of Tokai" when Yamauchi Kazutoyo entered it as lord in the Warring States period and carried out large-scale renovations. Its greatest appeal is the keep reconstructed in 1994 (Heisei 6), the first full-scale wooden reconstruction in Japan. The wooden structure, faithfully recreated from drawings of the time, exudes the warmth of wood and a weighty atmosphere, and from the top floor you can enjoy a panoramic view over Kakegawa's cityscape. In addition, the "Kakegawa Castle Palace" on the grounds is one of only four surviving castle palaces in Japan and is designated an Important Cultural Property. Its spacious tatami rooms and the tension of a space once used for government affairs are not to be missed. The surrounding area is maintained as a park, which is crowded in spring as a cherry blossom spot. It is within walking distance of the station and very easy to reach, making it ideal not only for history lovers but also for casual weekend strolls and family trips. Why not set out on a journey through history from the Warring States period to the Edo period, enjoying the castle town atmosphere?
