ABOUT
About this spot
Straddling the border of Kumamoto and Oita prefectures, Tsue-tate Onsen is a hot spring town with a long history. Step inside and you will find labyrinthine back alleys called sedoya, evoking the good old Showa era and wrapping you in a nostalgic atmosphere. Its greatest feature is the mushi-yu, a natural sauna that uses hot spring water of about 100 degrees Celsius. Its detox effect, warming you to the core and helping flush out impurities, is very popular with those who care about beauty and health. Steaming stations are also found throughout the hot spring town, where steaming eggs and seasonal vegetables in the steam of the source water and eating them is a true highlight unique to a hot spring destination. Every spring, the Koinobori Festival sees more than 3,000 carp streamers swimming in the sky across the river, drawing many visitors to see this grand sight. Soak in water rich in metasilicic acid, a skin-beautifying component, and spend quiet time listening to the babbling of the river. It is an ideal spot for trips with friends and family, and also for refreshing mind and body on your own.
