ABOUT
About this spot
Kikuchi Gorge in Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, lies within Aso-Kuju National Park and is a scenic area selected for its overwhelming beauty as one of "Japan's 100 Forest Bathing Forests" and "Japan's 100 Best Waterfalls." Emerald-green clear streams and waterfalls large and small, such as "Reimei Falls" and "Momijigase," are scattered throughout the gorge, and as soon as you step in you are wrapped in air full of negative ions. The average water temperature in summer is extremely low at around 13 degrees Celsius, making it a natural air conditioner and ideal for escaping the summer heat. In autumn the vivid foliage reflects on the water's surface, and in winter you may see magical rime ice, so the gorge captivates visitors with a different face in every season. The well-maintained walking trails take 30 minutes to an hour, and are recommended for a wide range of visitors, from families on a picnic to solo travelers who enjoy photography. Why not leave the bustle of daily life behind and enjoy a luxurious time soothed by the sound of the stream and birdsong?
