ABOUT
About this spot
Kumamoto Castle, the symbol of Kumamoto, is a renowned castle built in 1607 by the great general Kato Kiyomasa. The biggest highlight is the steeply sloped stone walls called "Musha-gaeshi," designed to block enemy invasion. Their overwhelming presence and functional beauty invite visitors into the romance of history. Although the castle suffered major damage in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, the main keep has now been fully restored and its interior has reopened to the public. Inside the main keep, the history from construction to the present is explained clearly with the latest video and models. From the observation floor on the top floor, you can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of Kumamoto City. The glittering gold leaf of the "Shokun-no-Ma" in the restored "Honmaru Goten" palace also conveys the splendid lifestyle of the time. In spring about 800 cherry trees bloom, and at night its fantastical illuminated form can be seen, so the beauty of the four seasons is another charm. It is an ideal spot for history enthusiasts as well as for making memories with family and friends, or for a quiet solo stroll. Please experience in person this symbol of Kumamoto, which is walking strongly toward recovery.
